The beginnings of the “Grass Roots Movement-Save the Gym.” The Grass Roots movement is not political, the founding four member group just genuinely want to help preserve this grand lady of a gymnasium. The gymnasium needs a new roof, and the cost will be at least $74,000. Where would the Parish community be without this historic edifice? It is the home of the local government: the village offices and most of town offices and along with these administrative services is RECREATION. There are a variety of organizational meetings and recreational activities seven days a week. Approximately 300 or more youths and adults any given week, and just for the record, a large majority of these folks are from town, not the village of Parish! You can take a step back in time when you walk through the doors of this grand lady. Walking away from the computer, the video games, the TV, this fast paced world we live in. Just stop by in the morning and walk laps, and of course the day to day services of the town and village, there is osteoporosis exercise on Mon. and Thursday 4:45-5:45 pm, 4:30-6 pm is yoga classes with Claudia, in the evening attend a meeting, shoot hoops with the over 40 crowd (6-9 pm, Wed. only) or join in a youth group (Thurs. night 7 pm), on the weekend it could be volleyball, kickball, roller-skating or more basketball. Just about anyone in town has a memory to share- and they are still making memories today. The Grass Roots mission will be starting off with a “one shingle at a time” campaign. You will find these paper shingles available for $1 (or a donation) at the many local businesses in town. In the near future there will be canvas bags with a Melanie Chapman sketch of the Mills and Petrie Memorial Gymnasium for purchase, along with a letter campaign, a strawberry festival, raffles, dinners, dances and possibly a motorcycle rally. Please consider joining this grassroots movement, by organizing a fund-raising event, by volunteering time or just making a generous contribution towards the goal, a new roof, the crown for this “grand lady.”
